Florida makes call on 2020 high school football season – 247Sports

After numerous states announced decisions to delay or move its high school football season this fall, the state of Florida is moving on with its plan to play practice on schedule and start openers in August, Board of Directors President Lauren Otero revealed during todays Board of Directors conference. Following a five-hour conversation led by decision-makers within the Florida High School Athletic Association on Monday, the Sunshine State voted 10-5 against the states own medical advisory committee to begin practice on July 27.
The Broward County Athletic Association stated Tuesday it will not follow guidance from the state level and has chosen to delay its start, citing student-athlete safety issues. Like California and Texas, Florida has seen a spike in coronavirus cases statewide this month, making it one of the countrys hotspots throughout the pandemic.
California announced this week it will move its high school football season to the spring, while Texas is pushing its fall schedule back a few weeks.
The Georgia High School Association voted unanimously Monday to move back the start of the regular season to early September, corresponding with college footballs first main weekend of video games, but did not change its prepare for a 10-game schedule.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday safeguarded his states battle versus COVID-19, saying he expects the surge of favorable cases to slow in the coming weeks, pointing out unreliable recent criticisms and the truth ICU bed capability, at the moment, is manageable.
According to Bulls247, DeSantis just recently called the prospective cancellation of high school sports for the fall term “devastating” and promoted a hope for a return to the stadium in the fall.
” Weve got a lot of young kids who this is their ticket to be able to go to college through sports,” DeSantis stated. “We wish to see chance for the students, and we want to see, undoubtedly, with a parental choice for them to be able to exercise that for range learning if they desire. I think we just have to offer as lots of opportunities for kids as possible.”
Previously this month, the FHSAAs coronavirus job force comprised of Florida-based physicians and specialists on disease advised the state to start fall football practice no earlier than Aug. 10.
