Latest Yankees injury updates: Luis Severino, Gleyber Torres, Corey Kluber – NJ.com

KANSAS CITY — When shortstop Gleyber Torres went on the injured list, he became the Yankees’ 15th player to go on the IL since the All-Star break.

They can’t catch a break.

Fortunately for them, they didn’t suffer any injuries in a 8-6, 11-inning win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Monday.

Before the game, manager Aaron Boone broke down the progress of a handful of the Yankees’ injured players:

Gleyber Torres, SS

Injury: Sprained thumb

The latest: The Yankees believe Torres could miss up to 20 days after hurting his thumb sliding headfirst. Boone said the Yankees thought the injury might have actually been worse, but were encouraged by the MRI Torres had. The shortstop will continue to see specialists the next few days.

Luis Severino, RHP

Injury: Groin strain, Tommy John surgery

The latest: Severino will start Friday at Double-A Somerset and the Yankees could activate him from the injured list afterward. Boone said the decision will depend on how prepared Severino seems. “Get built up a little bit more and then we’ll probably have a decision in front of us, whether he takes another one, and we’ll have a conversation of whether that one is with us.,” Boone said. Severino hasn’t pitched in the majors since late 2019.

Corey Kluber, RHP

Injury: Right shoulder strain

The latest: Kluber will make his first rehab start Friday at Double-A Somerset. He’s been on the injured list since June 5. General manager Brian Cashman has said the Yankees are hopeful Kluber could return by early September.

Domingo German, RHP

Injury: Right shoulder inflammation

The latest: German could begin throwing soon. “If all goes well with that, he should ramp up pretty quickly,” Boone said.
