Nearly two years ago, after coaching his first football game stateside since his firing from Baylor in 2016, Art Briles said something that sums up his approach to the mess he left behind in Waco.

It was Aug. 30, 2019, and Briles was making his debut at Mount Vernon High, the East Texas school where he resurfaced for two seasons before resigning in December. Briles was asked that night about those who were critical of him getting the opportunity to coach again after the sexual assault scandal that damaged victims’ lives, rocked the university and led to his dismissal.

After claiming that he hadn’t looked at or noticed such criticism, Briles said, “Y’all don’t wanna believe it, but I just like to coach football. That’s all I pay attention to, and that’s all I’ve ever done.
