The BYU Cougars will once again face an opponent that provided one of the most memorable games in program history.
Back in 1990, the 16th-ranked Cougars came from behind to beat the top-ranked and defending national champion Miami Hurricanes 28-21 in in Provo in front of a BYU record crowd of 66,235 to secure its first victory over a top-ranked team.
On Thursday, Stadium’s Brett McMurphy first reported that the two sides will play a home-and-home series in 2026 and 2028.

BYU confirmed in an announcement a short time later that it will travel to Miami for a Sept. 19, 2026, game, and the Hurricanes will visit Provo for a Sept. 2, 2028, contest.
“We are excited to announce this series with Miami,” BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe said in a statement. “We are always looking for opportunities to schedule storied football programs like Miami. Traveling to ACC country and competing in an NFL stadium will be a great experience for our coaches, players and fans.
“We are also excited to have the Hurricanes return to LaVell Edwards Stadium. I was a graduate assistant at BYU in 1990 when Miami came to Provo. It was one of the great games in BYU football history.”
The Hurricanes wound up finishing that 1990 season No. 3 in the country, while BYU finished No. 22, although Cougars quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy.
The two sides also played in 1988 in Miami, a game the Hurricanes won 41-17. Miami had won the national championship in 1987 and was ranked No. 2 in the country when it beat BYU.
