Gamecocks starting QB Luke Doty sidelined with injury – 247Sports.com

TheBigSpur.com has been informed South Carolina starting quarterback Luke Doty suffered a “mid-foot fracture and minor ligament damage after getting inadvertently stepped on late in practice (Friday).”

Doty is having multiple scans evaluated by medical professionals to determine the specifics on his road to recovery. There is no definite timetable for a return.

The young Gamecocks quarterback has been in line to start the 2021 season opener on Sept. 4. versus Eastern Illinois.

South Carolina now turns to redshirt senior Jason Brown, freshman Colten Gauthier, and redshirt sophomore walk-on Connor Jordan. Brown transferred into the program over the winter from FCS Saint Francis. Gauthier was a 247Sports Composite three-star recruit from Bethlehem, Ga. (Hebron Christian Academy) who signed in December and enrolled in January. Jordan is a Raleigh, N.C. native who joined the program in 2019.

Doty was tagged with the starting role at quarterback at the end of spring camp in late April and remained in command of it entering preseason camp, which started on August 6. The sophomore appeared in eight games in 2020 and started the final two games of the season under center. He spent most of the beginning of the season getting reps at wide receiver.

A Class of 2020 four-star dual threat quarterback from Myrtle Beach, Doty committed to the Gamecocks prior to the start of his junior season. Later that year he guided Myrtle Beach to a state championship, won at Williams-Brice Stadium. His senior year he won S.C. Mr. Football, but was unable to end his high school career on the field due to a hand injury suffered late in the season. The 247Sports Composite rated Doty as the nation’s No. 86 overall prospect, No. 4 dual-threat quarterback, and the No. 2 prospect from the state of South Carolina.
