Prince Amukamara, Noah Spence among Saints first roster cuts – Saints Wire

The New Orleans Saints held a walkthrough practice session on Sunday after flying home from Saturday’s preseason game with the Baltimore Ravens, and though they aren’t required to trim their roster down until Tuesday they’ve already made some personnel decisions.

One of the players waived on Sunday was veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett. The 2011 New York Giants first-round draft pick was signed early in training camp following a group tryout. Amukamara gave a good effort but it was clear late in the exhibition game that he lacked the athleticism to compete with younger competition.

Additionally, NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that the Saints waived linebacker Noah Spence. Spence converted from defensive end to try and compete at a less-crowded position, but no luck. Like Amukamara, Spence was another veteran who didn’t have a good night against the Ravens, so now they’ll give more practice reps to other options.

Underhill also reported that rookie running back Stevie Scott III was waived; he didn’t get on the field with the offense or special teams units at Baltimore. He’ll be processed on Monday’s update to the waiver wire along with these other initial roster cuts.

This year, teams must file weekly releases after each preseason game — starting with five roster cuts by Tuesday, Aug. 17. The next five to hit the waiver wire must be submitted no later than Tuesday, Aug. 24, and the final cut-down from 80 contracts to just 53 is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Here are the players waived so far. We’ll update this listing as more moves are reported:
