At this year s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple revealed the 3rd major CPU shift for the Mac as it chose to move far from using Intel chips to custom-made Apple Silicon processors. Switching to custom CPUs that are created internal provides Apple more control over its lineup of Macs, however why the choice came now?

According to previous Intel principal engineer François Piednoël, Intel s line of Skylake processors is to blame for Apple s decision to part methods with the chipmaker. In a recent video posted to YouTube, Piednoël says that the quality assurance for Intel s Skylake processors was more than a problem, it was abnormally bad.

Piednoël blames the shakeup in leadership along with the general mismanagement that caused important engineers leaving the group and bad planning that led to bad quality assurance of Skylake. He shared the story to let the Intel investors know what actually occurred. He thinks that Intel is still a great company and that it can find out and prevent future mistakes.

Based on Piednoël s account, while Apple was pondering to make its own chips, it wasn t up until after the Cupertino-based business dealt with concerns with Intel s Skylake processors that it began to make serious prepare for its own CPUs.

Piednoël says that it was the bad quality control of Skylake that required Apple to in fact go away from Intel s platform. If that was not the case, Apple would have carried on without any problems.
