North Carolina Courage and the Portland Thorns NWSL gamers released a joint statement on Saturday discussing their choice to kneel throughout the National Anthem:
” We took a knee today to protest racial injustice, cops brutality, and systemic racism against Black people and individuals of color in America. We love our nation and we have taken this opportunity to hold it to a greater requirement. It is our responsibility to require that the liberties and flexibilities this Nation was founded upon are encompassed everyone.”
The demonstrations eclipsed the significance of having the first professional team sport return in the middle of the pandemic.
Previous San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling throughout the National Anthem in 2016 to oppose police brutality and injustice. Today, demonstrations against racism and police cruelty continue across the United States following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Rayshard Brooks.
While players throughout different sports have knelt in protest in some kind or other, having nearly every gamer on every NWSL group kneeling together was a powerful display screen.
