Privacy-focused online search engine DuckDuckGo has been brought back in India after being inaccessible for lots of users there since July 1st, Android Police reported. Reports about what was triggering the blackout have actually differed. Some users reported the Indian federal government appeared to be behind the block, and others stated they were getting what appeared to be DNS lookup errors, according to Android Police.
On June 29th, Indias Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology prohibited more than 50 China-based apps consisting of TikTok and WeChat, saying they were “engaged in activities … prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India,” according to a press release.
DuckDuckGo tweeted that the service appeared to be restored in India since Saturday early morning.
Its not clear whether Pennsylvania-based DuckDuckGo may have been unintentionally obstructed as part of that larger effort, or whether there was another reason for the blackout. DuckDuckGo was not on the Indian governments June 29th list of banned apps.
DuckDuckGo did not right away respond to an ask for remark Saturday.
