A local of Mobile and an alumnus of the Port Citys Central High School, McCovey played 19 seasons with the Giants, struck 521 Major League home runs and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986. The very first baseman died in 2018.
The McCovey statue was revealed in 2003, and the Giants dont expect it to come back up until 2023, when the preliminary stage of the waterfront task must be finished.
The statue stood at McCovey Point in China Basin Park on the other side of a body of water informally understood as McCovey Cove behind the right-field wall of Oracle Park.
The statue is one of 5 of former Giants stars connected with Oracle Park. The other gamers honored are Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, Willie Mays and Gaylord Perry.
The San Francisco Giants held their very first practice of summer season camp on Friday as they prepare for MLBs truncated 60-game season. But something was missing out on when the Giants went back to Oracle Park– the Willie McCovey statue.
While statues have actually been pulled down by protestors and gotten rid of by authorities recently throughout the nation, the Giants removed the McCovey statue to keep it safe during a building and construction task, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
