,” Verstappen stated in the post-qualifying press conference.
Verstappen described that he found the last of qualifying harder, with Q3 having slower times than in Q2 after the rain magnified in the closing phases of the middle sector.
” Overall quali was excellent – just Q1 was so busy,” said Verstappen.
” You couldnt see a thing, you always needed to drop [and] leave a little area so you might do a lap.
” So essentially in the entire of Q1 I didnt actually have a complimentary lap, however still it was alright. The track I believe was not too bad to drive on.
” Its just with these cars and trucks, with these huge tyres on its unbelievable – you cant see a thing when you are within 6 seconds of the cars and truck ahead of you.
” But it was all working out – exact same in Q2 actually – I believe it was all pretty great.
” But then towards completion it began to rain a bit more and right away sector two was becoming more challenging.
” So I could not actually enhance my last two or three laps – however it was excellent enough naturally to go to Q3.
” And then Q3 was very tough – for me at least. Simply a lot of standing water.
” I lost rather a lot of grip and it didnt feel as great as it performed in Q1 and Q2 but still naturally to be second is alright.”
Max Verstappen says Sebastian Vettels pitting Ferrari triggered understeer that contributed to his Formula 1 Styrian Grand Prix Q3 spin, but did not think he could deny Lewis Hamilton pole.
Verstappen was Hamiltons closest danger for the leading area in certifying on Saturday for the second race of the 2020 season at the Red Bull Ring and had improved his opening sector time on his final lap in Q3.
As the lap wore on the Red Bull chauffeur had to capture 2 big snaps of oversteer – at the long left of Turn 6 and approaching the fast right of Turn 8 – and he then half-spun his RB16 as he ran through the final 2 corners.
Vettel, who qualified 10th, was pitting on the inside of the penultimate corner as Verstappen approached – although the conditions suggested the Dutchman was uninformed who remained in front of him.
” I guess it was Seb entering the pits – you cant see even the colour of the vehicle [in the rain],” Verstappen said in the post-qualifying press conference.
” I understeered due to the fact that of it and then I went a bit large – like I came onto the kerb on the exit and then I lost it.
” So, I had a four-wheel drift into the last corner however, anyway, it was not excellent enough a lap to beat Lewis.”
