The conditional draft choose the Detroit Red Wings got from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Mike Green on Feb. 23 will be a fourth-round selection this year.
The possibility of the pick upgrading to a third-round choice in 2021 was removed after Green announced on Saturday that he will not participate in the NHLs restart.
Even if Green played, the Oilers still required to reach the conference finals, with Green dipping into least half of their video games, for the choice to be updated.
The Oilers will deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in a best-of-five qualifying round series. NHL games will resume on Aug. 1 with Toronto and Edmonton serving as host cities.
Green will be an unlimited free representative after the season.
” Due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and after much factor to consider, Ive chosen for deeply individual family health reasons, not to take part in the return to play,” Green said in a statement. “This has actually been a tough choice understanding Im going to miss the opportunity to complete in the playoffs with a Stanley Cup competitor. I want the very best of luck to the guys and I value the Edmonton Oilers assistance.”
Green, 34, missed the start of the 2018-19 season due to a virus that was assaulting his liver. He suffered a reoccurrence of the infection late in the season. He appeared in just 2 video games for the Oilers prior to suffering a sprained MCL.
Green mentioned household reasons for not playing.
The Red Wings have 10 picks in this years draft, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 9-10. They have 3 choices in the 2nd round (their own plus Washingtons and Edmontons) and 2 in the third (their own and Vegas).
