As far as winter sports go, maless and ladiess basketball teams can begin playing their maximum of 22 regular-season games on Jan. 22, with nationwide champion rounds occurring in late April.
Other Michigan junior college programs affected include the winter seasons sports of wrestling, diving, bowling and swimming and indoor track.
Among the states top teams affected by the nationwide modifications consist of the Muskegon Community College and Schoolcraft College maless basketball groups, which both earned top-five seeds in the NJCAA tournament, the undefeated Macomb Community College ladiess basketball team and the nationally ranked Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team.
The new schedule will also have implications at the Division-I level, as fall sports programs seeking to hire the junior college ranks will need to wait until well after National Signing Day in February to see a complete season of highlight tape from possible prospects.
Spring sports competition remains intact, with minor modifications to dates.
” We desire our student-athletes to be able to compete in the most safe possible environment,” GRCC President Bill Pink said in a news release. “This is an unprecedented relocation, but we are living in extraordinary times. We respect the NJCAA decision, and we will continue planning with current assistance while keeping the scholastic success, security and the health of our trainee professional athletes as the leading priority.”
” Our biggest focus is and always has been supplying the best opportunities for our student-athletes,” NJCAA President and CEO Dr. Christopher Parker stated in a press release. “Through a unified effort from our Presidential Advisory Council, the Board of Regents, and leadership personnel, our most recent strategy of action provides a course that keeps our student-athletes completing at the greatest level with correct safety measures in place. As we progress as an association, we will continue to offer chances for our student-athletes, coaches, and all those involved with the NJCAA to be successful and safe.”
Under the strategy, NJCAA beach ball teams will be limited to 21 competitors dates and can hold matches as early as Jan 29, 2021, while guyss and womens soccer teams can play up to 14 video games beginning as early as April 2.
The National Junior College Athletic Associations Board of Regents approved Monday a strategy to move most fall and winter season sports to the spring for the 2020-21 academic year as a preventative measure against the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
Just maless and ladiess cross country will run throughout their set up season under the plan, which alters the athletic landscape for 20 colleges in Michigan that contend at the NJCAA level.
While there arent any NJCAA football programs in Michigan, there are several Division-I college programs in the state that hire the JUCO ranks, and it will be interesting to see how the relocation from fall to spring affects that hiring front.
