Hearthstone’s new expansion is Scholomance Academy, with August release – Polygon

The three significant mechanics introduced this expansion are Dual-Class Cards, Studies, and Spellburst.

Dual-Class Cards

For those not familiar with Warcraft lore, Scholomance was a school for necromancers that fell under disrepair after things went awfully wrong. The academy functioned as a dungeon in both vanilla World of Warcraft and Mists of Pandaria, and is considered a fan favorite.

The next Hearthstone growth is taking us back to a familiar location in World of Warcrafts history– and back in time, to when the school of Scholomance was at its peak. Scholomance Academy takes location prior to the launch of World of Warcraft, and presents 135 new cards to Hearthstone, together with some new mechanics to shake things up. The expansion is set to be launched in early August, Blizzard revealed Tuesday.

There will be 10 combinations in between the Hearthstone classes. Each combination will receive its own signature Legendary Professor minion, and there will be a total of 40 Dual-Class cards.

Spellburst

Spellburst minions and weapons established a powerful effect that sets off when the player casts a spell from their hand. Cards like Yogg-Saron or Zul jin– which activate a set of spells upon being played– wont set off a spellburst; it needs to be a purposeful action from the gamer.

Dual-Class Cards are utilized by 2 classes, and are readily available in both of their libraries. A Demon Hunter and a Warlock can both access a set of demons, while a Rogue and a Warrior will get access to a shared inventory of weapons.

Research studies are spells that allow gamers to “Discover” a card. Discover was presented in 2015, and it gives gamers an option between 3 cards within specific criteria, such as a Taunt minion, or a minion that costs more than 8 mana. Studies will develop on that mechanic. They Discover a card when players drop a Study. They can follow up that discovery with another card of the exact same type for less mana, leading to reliable combos.
