HOUSTON– Texans coach and general supervisor Bill OBrien on Friday said the team is “working hard” with quarterback Deshaun Watsons representatives on an agreement extension, and that “we desire him here for a very long time.”
Watson, a first-round pick in 2017, was qualified for a contract extension for the first time this offseason. He made less than $3.8 million in 2019, which was simply 4.88% of the Texans cap. He is scheduled to make $4.4 million during the 2020 season.
” Deshaun is an excellent player, an even better individual, and we want him here for a long time,” OBrien stated. “… I understand that were striving. Were not going to actually discuss it in the media, but clearly we feel so strongly about him and the future of him in this offense, in this organization, and we want him here for a long time.”

“We enjoy Deshaun. We want him here for a long time, but were not going to do or negotiate agreements anything like that in the media. Well keep that between us and Deshauns representatives.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was drafted 2 choices prior to Watson in 2017, signed a 10-year extension earlier this month that might be worth as much as $503 million, sources informed ESPN.
During a recent interview with Michael Vick on Fox Sports, Watson stated his scenario is various from that of Mahomes.
” My scenario, and I dont desire to state anything too crazy, is various than his,” Watson said. “Signing a deal for 10 years, you know, I have to speak with my representative on that. Take a seat and believe, What do I want in my career? Where I wish to be for an extended period of time? I like Houston, I enjoy the company, I like the teammates and all the players, however all that stuff is constantly altering.”
