Looney formerly played for the Mississippi State University football group between 2007 and 2010.
In a declaration, the school stated the “entire Mississippi State Family is sad and deeply saddened by the loss of among our really own in D.J. Looney.”
Looney, who was entering his 3rd season on personnel with the Ragin Cajuns as an assistant offending line coach, died Saturday early morning after suffering a cardiovascular disease throughout a group workout at Cajun Field in Lafayette, the statement said.
” At this time, the Department of Sports asks that fans, buddies and acquaintances of Coach Looney keep his family and the football program in their ideas and prayers,” it said.
” D.J. was an outstanding student-athlete and coach and an even much better person. He had such a positive personality, mindset and always a smile on his face. D.J. will be remembered and missed by all who understood and enjoyed him,” MSU Director of Athletics John Cohen said.
He was hiring organizer at East Mississippi Community College from 2012 to 2013 and served as deals with and tight ends coach at Central Arkansas for two seasons in 2014 and 2015. Looney went on to function as a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia in 2016 before returning to MSU in 2017 as tight ends coach.
MSU President Mark E. Keenum called Looney “a remarkable guy with an unlimited future.”
Looney was essential to establishing the Louisiana-Lafayette offensive line,
according to a bio on the sports department site, which featured NFL players Robert Hunt and Kevin Dotson, who now bet the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively.
Looney finished from MSU with a degree in arts and sciences in 2010, MSUs declaration said. During his time at the school, he invested three years as an SEC Student Advisory Council Representative and acted as president of MSUs Campus Student Advisory Council in 2009, after working as vice president the year prior.
Looney kicked off his training career with the MSU Bulldogs in 2011 as a graduate assistant, per MSU.
