Oakland Athletics bench coach Ryan Christenson apologized Thursday for “unintentionally” making a gesture resembling a Nazi salute following the As win over the Texas Rangers.
Christenson was seen on electronic camera extending his ideal arm in the air as the group was making its way off the field, participating in an elbow bump celebration with coaches.
Closer Liam Hendriks might be seen fixing Christensons gesture so it fit what the rest of the group was doing. Christenson then turned around and duplicated the gesture.
Groups have moved away from traditional high-fives to follow social distancing guidelines state by MLB. In a statement Thursday, Christenson said he was trying to adapt the elbow bump gesture that the team does rather of high-fives and it “unintentionally led to a racist and dreadful salute that I do not believe in.”
” What I did is undesirable and I deeply ask forgiveness,” Christenson stated in the declaration.
The As said in the declaration that they do not condone the gesture or support and “are deeply sorry that this happened on our playing field.”
