A teardown video, shared by OWC, exposes the internal modifications in the new 2020 27-inch iMac.
The 2020 27-inch iMac was revealed previously today with 10th-generation Intel Core processors, AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics, up to 128GB of RAM, up to 8TB of storage, a 1080p front-facing FaceTime cam, a True Tone display screen with a nano-texture glass alternative, greater fidelity speakers, and studio-quality microphones.
MacRumors online forum user TwoH summarizes the modifications:
– Camera is attached to the LCD, so have to take extra care to remove a third cable when opening up the iMac. Other links around the exact same position as the 2017/19 models. The greatest change inside the 2020 27-inch iMac is the lack of mechanical tough drive, as all models now come with SSDs by default. Instead, there are new solder joints for a growth board to hold extra SSDs in the 4TB and 8TB setups.
– Camera is attached to the LCD, so have to take extra care to get rid of a 3rd cable when opening up the iMac.- Lack of mechanical HDD (and SATA adapters on logicboard) – however this was obvious.- Extra microphone( s) stuck to the case, especially an extra cable television made connecting into tje logicboard near to the backlight. Other links around the exact same position as the 2017/19 designs.- Solder joints for the 4 & & 8TB design iMacs.
The absence of mechanical difficult drive has left a large amount of unused totally free area within the maker. It is of note that Apple did not select to implement the additional cooling present in iMac Pro in this space, likely due to cost.
Due to the 2020 iMac sharing practically all of its internal elements with previous designs, it will likely disappear difficult or expensive to repair than previous designs. Likewise, most parts from previous years ought to be compatible with this new model.
The only part of the 2020 iMac that is still easily upgradeable is the RAM, which is available through a small door on the back of the device.
The biggest change inside the 2020 27-inch iMac is the lack of mechanical hard disk drive, as all designs now include SSDs by default. OWC notes that the disassembly now seems quicker for this factor. There are no longer any SATA connectors in the machine and a little
SSD is soldered straight to the motherboard. Rather, there are new solder joints for a growth board to hold additional SSDs in the 4TB and 8TB setups. In the 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations, the growth board is not present.
Another internal change is the additional microphone followed the bottom of the case, with the other microphone in the same position as previous years. The new 1080p webcam is connected to the LCD, so particular care needs to be required to remove a third cable when opening the machine.
OWC did point out solder joints and mount that may be where the
4TB and 8TB designs have flash storage growth board.
Beyond these small modifications, the internals are similar as previous models, with the very same power supply, cooling, socketed CPU, and earphone jack. Although the speakers are supposedly updated, they do not appear to be any visually different within the machine.
