Even if you arent playing around with iOS 14 or macOS Big Sur yet, theres one setting you wish to know if youre an Apple News+ subscriber. Thats since beginning with iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, web links to news stories that you tap or click will bring up stated stories in Apple News+, rather than the publishers site.
This “feature” just applies to publishers taking part in Apple News+, but its a little bit of a disconcerting takeover by Apples app. While its not unusual for various websites to reroute links to their apps whenever possible, or a minimum of ask you if you d like to launch the associated app instead of the web-based material youre trying to access, Apples application in iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur sends you ideal to the News app. And, as far as I can inform, this habits is enabled by default.
To disable it in iOS 14– since you d rather continue checking out a publishers website than launch that exact same content in Apples app– youll desire to check out Settings > > News. Therein, search for the “Open Web Links in News” option and turn it off:

And if you do not want to deal with that exact same treatment on macOS Big Sur, youll want to introduce the News app and pull up its preferences via the News menu in your menu bar. Youll see this screen:

G/O Media may get a commission
Of course, theres also one huge advantage to keeping these options enabled. If you register for Apple News+, however not news sites individually, then clicking stories hosted on websites that use a paywall needs to rather pull up the full short article in Apples apps, rather than send you to a “log in here!” or “sorry, customers only” prompt.
Still, is this a little an overreach by Apple? Once the last variations iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur launch for everyone, Ill be curious to see what individuals think.
This “function” just applies to publishers getting involved in Apple News+, but its a bit of a jarring takeover by Apples app. While its not uncommon for various websites to reroute links to their apps whenever possible, or at least ask you if you d like to release the associated app rather of the web-based material youre trying to access, Apples implementation in iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur sends you right to the News app. If you click a link in Safari, it opens Apple News. If you click a link in some other app like Slack, it opens in Apple News– even if your default internet browser is Chrome. Possibly it opens a web browser, maybe it opens Apple News.”
If you d choose to keep your web searching distanced from your News reading, Uncheck that box.
Apples execution of this redirection isnt ideal. As Dieter Bohn writes for The Verge:
If you click a link in Safari, it opens Apple News. If you click a link in some other app like Slack, it opens in Apple News– even if your default browser is Chrome. Maybe it opens a web browser, possibly it opens Apple News.”
