Daniel Cormier issues first statement since UFC 252 loss: Been a helluva ride, huh? – MMA Junkie

After Miocic stopped Cormier in 2019 to win the belt back, it established the trilogy rematch for this previous Saturday.

Cormier dropped a consentaneous decision to Miocic in the UFC 252 centerpiece at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The fight wasnt without a little debate. Cormier unintentionally poked Miocic in the eye early in the battle. And in the 3rd round, Miocic caught Cormier with an unintentional eye poke that referee Marc Goddard missed out on. Cormier said afterward he was left with no vision in his left eye.

Daniel Cormier stated as much in the instant consequences of his UFC 252 loss this past Saturday, however now it seems like hes officially closed the book on battling once again.

Cormier leaves MMA as an unusual two-division UFC champion. He won the light heavyweight title, then knocked out Miocic to win the heavyweight belt in their first conference. He then relinquished the 205-pound strap to focus on heavyweight.

And UFC president Dana White weighed in to say he didnt think Cormier could utilize the poke as an excuse for the loss. Cormier supposedly suffered a torn cornea, however wont need surgical treatment.

Cormier (22-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) stated in the buildup to his trilogy rematch with heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic (20-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC) that lose or win, the battle likely would be his last, and Monday he put out a statement on Instagram intimating hes headed into retirement.

Cormier leaves competitive MMA still best known for his fierce rivalry with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. When he checked positive for banned compounds, Jones holds a win over Cormier and another that was overturned.

On his Instagram, Cormier thanked his household, teammates, the UFC and fans and congratulated Miocic on the win. His full statement is below.
