In general– and I saw video to get his tone, too– Ross does not seem to be extremely into any of the customs stuff, and I like that he highlighted it by pointing to the fallacies in what counts as “bush league.” Groups still shift when theyre way down in the game, so shouldnt the player still be going all out?
Its not like it was an obscene blowout. A seven-run lead is certainly healthy, but there were still 2 innings left for the Rangers to bat against one of the worst bullpens in baseball (that just lost their closer, Kirby Yates). Do not inform your guys not to complete because circumstance– Ross desires his men sticking to their strategy at the plate, even if that includes swinging at a 3-0 pitch.
The mention of Tatis, a young superstar, as “one of the very best gamers in the game” likewise made another subtle point: why would we wish to limit what baseball can be? Let the finest players do their thing, even if theyre young. Do not act like you need to “teach them the ways” of baseball.
I didnt * think * David Ross would fall into the classification of baseball players and managers who think Fernando Tatis, Jr. swinging at a 3-0 pitch in a seven-run game with TWO innings staying was some severe sin. Well, offered how much that whole thing actually pissed me off, I was hoping to hear his point of view. And I was hoping he d say the ideal things.
I asked #Cubs manager David Ross if he, as a previous catcher, has a problem with someone swinging 3-0 and a “huge” lead.
” If a person wishes to swing, I dont have a problem with it, particularly when theyre one of the finest gamers in the video game.”
He did!
Dollars to donuts says the players on the Cubs appreciate Rosss point of view here, as suggested yesterday by Anthony Rizzo, and stressed in no unsure terms by Steven Souza, Jr.:
When its 0-2 and youre up, if you gon na get mad at me swinging 3-0 you better throw me an automated ball. I spit on 3 pitches its my option to swing or not, dont inform me when I can swing because you cant throw strikes. @tatis_jr do not let anybody bully you like that.
