2020 Denver Broncos Training Camp: Day 6 news and notes – Mile High Report

Day six of Denver Broncos camp remains in the books and it was a tough one injury wise. We have a possible serious injury to starting inside linebacker Todd Davis, K.J. Hamler sidelined for 2 weeks, Von Miller( GASP) dealing with a fine-tuned elbow and Melvin Gordon dealing with a tweaked rib injury. We also have Jerry Jeudy doing Jerry Jeudy things, a rookie linebacker who could see some playing time in 2020 and more!

Injuries start to pile up

” He is a good path runner. Hes got an excellent feel for it, but hes going to have to be able to bring that up to the next level versus press protection and against various different coverages that hell see in the NFL. Hell see more than he saw in college.

Another day and another radiant Jerry Jeudy evaluation. The novice made some more impact plays today and when Drew Lock isnt throwing to Courtland Sutton( Hes doing it a lot apparently) Jeudy is getting the rest and making it look simple out there.

The Broncos coaching personnel is attempting Jeudy out in multiple functions to see where hes best at it and what he can and cant do therefore they can get the finest unit out there on game days.

Jerry Jeudy continues to make plays.

Mentioning Jeudys route running ability, Head Coach Vic Fangio was asked about this after practice today. He informed the media that it was apparent Jeudy is a great path runner, however that hell need to adapt to beating press coverages in the NFL. He continued by saying that Jeudy isnt there yet as a pro but think he can achieve this.

Next we have Todd Davis who appears to have suffered a significant injury during Training Camp for the second consecutive summer season. Its the exact same injury he had last summertime that sidelined him throughout camp and through the first handful video games of the 2019 season.

If you studied Jeudy at all during the draft process you will know he can lineup anywhere and make plays. He has the speed to go deep, the separation capability to get open no matter what, and outstanding path running ability to be unsafe in the slot.

” KJs got a hamstring that hes been attempting to resolve. He hadnt had the ability to do that. Hell be on the shelf for a couple weeks. Todd injured his leg there. I wasnt sure. It sort of happened towards completion of practice on the other side of the field from where I was at. Im not sure yet. I dont have anything to report there.”

Rookie Justin Strnad will see some playing time as a novice.

With Todd Davis decreasing for what appears to be an extended amount of time, someone will need to step up and replace the snaps he would be playing. Josey Jewell got those today and will likely continue getting them going forward, but dont sleep on the novice Justin Strnad.

” Right now, were teaching him all the sports for 2 reasons– one, discover the very best area for him not just for him separately, however for us as an unit– whats our finest mix. Two, its always good to– people require to understand other spots since in the game when youre only dressing four or five, when things occur, guys have to be able to know more than one position. Its twofold.”.

” Von fine-tuned his elbow so we pulled him out. Melvin modified his ribs, so we pulled him out too. I do not know the seriousness of either one.”

Now, I believe well see Jewell get the start and play running down for the Broncos, but it sounds like Strnad might see time in sub-packages his novice year. Hes a rangy athletic linebacker who has the coverage chops to manage the function and is a player who will master area. Hell experience growing discomforts obviously, but it looks like hes getting these associates in practice.

Heading into todays practice, the Broncos have actually prevented the injury bug through their first 5 days of Training Camp. That all changed on day 6 of Broncos Camp when we saw one possibly severe injury to a starting protector, a rookie sidelined for two weeks, and 2 injuries to two more essential gamers, consisting of Von Miller.

With K.J. Hamler down, search for DaeSean Hamilton to get more invovled however also dont sleep on rookie Tyrie Cleveland who has been succeeding reportedly. These two have actually appeared to separate themselves from the competitors.

Its looking more and more like 5th round rookie ILB Justin Strnad will get playing time this year. # 9sports– Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) August 20, 2020.

So, let us hope that these 2 are simply dealing with some minors bumps and bruises and wont miss out on much time if any. Both are getting tests, so ideally we get some excellent news earlier instead of later on.

Yikes.

Next, we have Von Miller and running back Melvin Gordon who suffered injuries. These seem a little more minor( ideally) as Head Coach Vic Fangio mentioned that Von “fine-tuned” his elbow while Gordon “tweaked” his jobs.

With Davis down for awhile, search for Josey Jewell to be raised into a beginning role, a minimum of in running downs. He has actually been having a great camp according to observers so hell get his opportunity once again this summer season. Josh Watson is another player to see here. However, rookie linebacker Justin Strnad is the guy to watch here. More on that later on! (Thats a tease folks!).

Adaptability is crucial and injuries will unfortunately will happen so its great to see what he can do and give him some representatives in these roles too.

Fangio said KJ Hamler out couple weeks with hamstring. # 9sports– Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) August 20, 2020

I think its clear that the Broncos at the really least have two stud young large receivers on their lineup who will be able to grow with a young quarterback, a young and explosive tight end and a gifted backfield. Its pretty amazing to see how much this group has improved simply from this time in 2015.

Rookie second round choice, wide receiver K.J. Hamler will be sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury. Those pesky injuries appear to get a few players a camp, so fortunately its just a minor injury and well see the explosive rook on the field quicker rather than later.

9NEWS Denvers Mike Klis stated that its ending up being apparent Strand will be getting some playing time this year. I presumed sub-package play was always in the cards for him, but with Davis down, itll be intriguing to see if he can begin to press Jewell for an even bigger role.

Great sequence from the fifth-round rookie LB out of Wake Forest.– Nick Kosmider (@NickKosmider) August 20, 2020.

Fellow linebacker A.J. Johnson also had some glowing praise for the rookie as well. He told the media that while Strand is not best( and neither is he) that hes looking smooth out there which hes glad the Broncos drafted him.

” Ive liked Justin so far. Hes shown some capability both in the pass defense area– the run video game, we have not had a great deal of shots of it yet. The within linebacker, just to piggyback on the previous set of questions, its a position that will suffer more than others with the absence of training school time and the absence of preseason games. Hes got a lot of work. We need to accelerate the procedure with him. Overall, I think hes succeeding. I like what I see. A lot of that is based upon just what I see which enables me to predict. You might not be seeing it on tape or you men enjoying in practice live, but I like particular things that show to me that hell have the ability to do it eventually.”.

The Other Day, Vic Fangio was inquired about Strand and had some positive comments about the rookie linebacker.

Fangio isnt one to distribute compliments like that, so when he applauds someone, especially a rookie, its noteworthy in my book. So hell be a player to view in the coming days for sure.

Quotables.

” Were trying to get attempting enough reps. Theyre not getting as much as the ones, but we think were getting them a good amount in great quantity of time we can be out there. Were trying our best there, but undoubtedly they have to take advantage of every associate that they do get to execute it, understand the project, play it with the right strategy, then be able to complete it with skill. We just have to constantly play that fine line of getting the team prepared also with getting sufficient snaps for everybody to assess since one of the most essential things we have to do is select the 53-man lineup.”.

” Thats big for me. Me and Coach Munchak have a really excellent relationship. We talked regularly throughout practice, before the video game, after the game, just trying to get me better.
