Todays report from Bloomberg corroborates an earlier claim from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In January, Kuo claimed that Apple would be releasing a “smaller wireless charging mat” for iPhone users. Kuos report particularly focused on items coming throughout the very first half of 2020, however the COVID-19 pandemic most likely tossed a wrench in some of Apples strategies for product and accessory releases.
One of the advantages of AirPower was its “drop anywhere” design that worked with iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch. This new cordless charger is said to be “less enthusiastic” than AirPower, but details are unclear. It could be a single-device wireless battery charger, or possibly something a little more sophisticated.
As part of a wider appearance at the new Nomad Base Station Pro and the Aira cordless charging innovation behind it, Bloomberg reports that Apple is dealing with a “less enthusiastic” cordless charger for the iPhone. This comes after the notorious announcement, delay, and ultimate cancellation of AirPower.
The passing mention of a new Apple wireless charger becomes part of Bloombergs larger report on the new Nomad Base Station Pro and the wireless charging technology developed by the startup Aira:

More than a year after AirPowers demise, Apple is developing a less enthusiastic cordless battery charger for the iPhone. However while the Silicon Valley giant deal with that product, Aira Inc., a start-up based in Chandler, Arizona, today is rolling out a technology called FreePower that aims to provide on the initial guarantee of AirPower, and works for devices from various manufacturers, consisting of those from Google and Samsung Electronics Co.– not simply Apple.
The Nomad Base Station Pro, which we went hands-on with earlier today, features a nearly drop anywhere style with support for smart devices and earphones such as AirPods. Unlike what AirPower would have provided, Nomads charging mat does not use support for Apple Watch. Apple ultimately canceled the AirPower project due to quality concerns.
