MILWAUKEE– Three Major League Baseball games were delayed Wednesday as players across the sports landscape reacted in the wake of the weekend shooting by cops of Jacob Blake, a Black male, in Wisconsin.
Games in between the Cincinnati Reds and Brewers in Milwaukee, Seattle Mariners and Padres in San Diego and the Los Angeles Dodgers and Giants in San Francisco were called off hours before they were set to begin.
Dodgers star Mookie Betts, who is Black, informed his teammates he was sitting out and they backed him.
” For me, I think no matter what, I wasnt going to play tonight,” Betts said.
Other MLB video games had completed, remained in development or almost to start as the announcements were made.

NBA authorities later revealed that all 3 of the days arranged championship game had been postponed.
Three WNBA video games also were cancelled inside the leagues bubble in Bradenton, Florida.
MLB players drove the choices that resulted in the posts ponement. Others, such as Colorado outfielder Matt Kemp, opted to sit out while their teams played.
” Given the discomfort in the communities of Wisconsin and beyond following the shooting of Jacob Blake, we respect the choices of a number of players not to play tonight. Significant League Baseball remains unified for modification in our society and we will be allies in the battle to end racism and injustice,” the league stated in a declaration.
Blake was shot seven times by cops on Sunday. He was shot as he attempted to enter the chauffeurs side door of his lorry with 3 of his kids within. Video of the shooting was dispersed on social media.
” The gamers from the Reds and makers have decided to not play tonights baseball video game. With our neighborhood and our country in such pain, we wanted to draw as much attention to the problems that actually matter, especially racial injustice and systemic oppression,” Milwaukee and Cincinnati gamers stated in a joint declaration at Miller Park.
Said Brewers manager Craig Counsell: “The Bucks led here. The NBA led here. However our gamers, they went first in Major League Baseball and Im still very happy of them for that.”
The Brewers supported that stance.
” The Milwaukee Brewers organization signs up with the players in their choice to not play tonights game. We require to stop briefly and reflect on the events that are causing such discomfort and difficulty to our regional neighborhood and nation. The entire organization is dedicated to putting the spotlight on racial oppression, inequality, and the need for change,” the team stated.
Milwaukees Ryan Braun said the Bucks choice inspired the Brewers to act. The team held a conference Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in the choice not to play.
” That inspired us. … At some point, actions speak louder than words,” Braun stated in a video news conference. “Because this taken place so near home, it hits us differently than it does other teams.”
Braun stated the groups intent is to continue with the season as set up, however “this was our leading concern today.”
Mariners infielder/outfielder Dee Gordon said in a tweet that the group chose unanimously to avoid the game at Petco Park.
“Ending authorities cruelty is more crucial than sports,” Pirates infielder Cole Tucker composed in a tweet. Pittsburgh played the Chicago White Sox in the afternoon, before the Bucks became the first professional sports group to choose it would not play Wednesday.
Dexter Fowler and Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals, both Black, opted not to take part in St. Louis game against Kansas City. The team tweeted that it supported the decision. Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, who is Black, was gotten rid of from the lineup soon before first pitch, although no main statement was immediately made as to why.

The Mariners have the most Black players of any team in MLB, and pitcher Justin Dunn tweeted: “Enough is enough.”
Dunn included a Black Lives Matter hashtag and a cartoon picture of he and his Black teammates in Black Lives Matter t-shirts.
A sprinkling of gamers from the Dodgers and Giants were loosening up and the grounds team was prepping the field at Oracle Park when the game was postponed.
Kemp, who is Black, revealed on social networks he would skip Colorados game in Arizona “in demonstration of the oppressions my individuals continue to suffer.”
” I could not play this video game I love a lot tonight understanding the hurt and anguish my people continue to feel,” he wrote. “In a world where we are the ones who need to remain calm while an experienced expert points a weapon in our face; a world where the people in uniforms who took an oath to safeguard us are the very same ones killing us; a world where we become hashtags before we even reach our potential; we must stand together, speak out, protest, and be the modification we demand, require, and need so bad.”
Mets slugger Dom Smith, a Black guy who has discussed his experiences in a mainly white sport, took a knee for the nationwide anthem for the very first time this season. New York pitcher Robert Gsellman, who is white, wore a Black Lives Matter T-shirt rather of a uniform as he watched from the stands behind the dugout.
