Notre Dame is distancing itself from Lou Holtz after the former coach was crucial of Democratic governmental prospect Joe Biden, calling him a “Catholic in name just,” throughout a speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night.
Holtz coached Notre Dame for 11 seasons and won the 1988 national title. He also coached at South Carolina for 6 seasons afterwards and coached the Jets for one season. Hes been a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump.
Jenkins wasnt safeguarding Biden necessarily. But the attack on Bidens faith was not something he would back.
” While Coach Lou Holtz is a previous coach at Notre Dame, his usage of the Universitys name at the Republican National Convention should not be taken to suggest that the University endorses his views, any candidate or any political celebration,” Jenkins said in a statement.
“Can you envision what would occur to us if President Trump had not shown up in 2016 to run for president? Im so delighted he revealed up.”
Father John Jenkins, the schools president, said that Holtz was promoting himself.
” Moreover, we Catholics should advise ourselves that while we may judge the objective moral quality of anothers actions, we must never ever question the genuineness of anothers faith, which is because of the mystical working of grace in that individuals heart,” Jenkins said. “In this fractious time, let us keep in mind that our highest calling is to love.”
