Thankfully, Ive discovered that playing on the most affordable difficulty reverses all of this confusion, to a degree. Wasteland 3 is playable in four basic problem settings. Wastelander is the standard trouble. Novice is the most affordable. Neither of those have friendly fire turned on, indicating you can line up shots and toss dynamites without threat. (The higher 2 tiers, Ranger and Supreme Jerk, included friendly fire switched on. Never!).

Even when facing some explosive pigs, my party members still made it through (mostly) intact. Switching the trouble didnt deter me from the belief that Wastelands complicated world wasnt made for a novice like me– in truth, I still do not fully understand how all these systems work– but at least I felt like I might endure in it.
