Mikal Smith, the boy of Illinois coach and previous Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, was apprehended in Tempe, Arizona, on Thursday on numerous charges connected to sex trafficking and a prostitution ring, according to multiple reports..
Smith, Arizona attorney basic Mark Brnovich tweeted out, is facing conspiracy, unlawfully carrying out a business, money laundering, pandering, prostitution, sex trafficking and threatening or intimidating charges..
A State Grand Jury has indicted Mikal Lee Smith, of Chandler, in connection with a supposed prostitution ring in Arizona. His co-defendant, Aprel Mae, is dealing with similar charges. He was apprehended Thursday morning and scheduled into the Gilbert Chandler Jail, according to NBC 12. He is due in court Sept. 10..
Smith played briefly at the college level for Arizona in 1996, and then worked as an assistant coach under his dad for four seasons with the Bears from 2009-2012. He rejoined his father in Tampa for a two-year stint as the Buccaneers securities coach in 2014 after investing a year with the Cowboys. Lovie was fired after the 2015 season, which marked the last time either coached in the NFL.
Lovie has given that taken a job with Illinois, where he was entering his 5th season.
