New York Giants head coach Joe Judge said Monday that players had voted on captains for 2020 on Monday morning. An announcement of who the team’s captains are will be made once he informs the players.
Judge said he wants a captain to be “someone who’s the voice of the team who can communicate for everyone in the locker room.”
Here are more takeaways from Judge’s brief Monday afternoon pre-practice videoconference.
On how many snaps players can handle with no preseason and a shortened training camp …
“We’re expecting players to have to play the full length,” Judge said. “We’ll spell guys as far as we can, but we’re going to have to make sure that we have the best guys on the field at all times to execute the plan in place.”
This is a case of ready or not, here comes the season.
Judge did admit that it would be a “challenge” because of the preseason restrictions teams faced.
“Someone’s gotta be out there. If we can spell someone for a play here or there, we can rotate it through, great … as of right now everyone is preparing to play every snap.”
On bad September football …
Even in a normal year, September NFL football can be ragged. Will it be even worse with no preseason games and the other restrictions mandated to deal with COVID-19?
“I think when you watch NFL football in September, regardless of the year, you see a degree of bad football out there on the field. Turnovers, penalties, some mental errors, you see some things within the flow and the operation of the game that isn’t the way that it looks later in the season,” Judge said. “That’s just the truth of the National Football League every year.
“I think in September you always see your share of bad football.”

- Judge said the three players the Giants claimed on waivers are still quarantining and going through the COVID-19 protocols. He said that offensive tackle Jackson Barton, wide receiver Damion Ratley and defensive back Adrian Colbert should all be available to practice on Wednesday.
- Judge said he was still not ready to say whether Nick Gates or Spencer Pulley would be the starting center Monday against Pittsburgh. “We’re going to go through another day or so and I’m going to talk to the players before we go ahead and decide anything internally,” Judge said.
