LSU star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was hospitalized over night on Friday and is expected to be released quickly, the school stated in a declaration hours before its season-opening video game versus Mississippi State on Saturday.
According to the declaration, Stingley became “acutely ill” on Friday night however the condition was not COVID-19 related.
While the declaration didnt state if Stingley had formally been ruled out of Saturdays game, a source told ESPN that his availability against Mississippi State would be “extremely not likely.” would be offered to play. Another source informed ESPN that “its up to the medical professionals.”
LSUs statement said Stingleys go back to activity will come “after a full assessment by the medical team.”
Stingley was an agreement All-American as a true freshman last season and was expected to anchor a defense as one of two returning starters.
The sophomore began all 15 games for LSUs 2019 championship game team as a freshman and led the SEC with 6 interceptions, which ranked fifth nationally. His 21 passes safeguarded also led the SEC and ranked second nationally.
