The National League Division Series that will take place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, will feature the best two teams in the National League. The Dodgers, who swept the Brewers in the wild card series, will face the Padres beginning on Tuesday.
San Diego outlasted the Cardinals in Game 3 of their wild card series on Friday.
This is the first-ever postseason meeting between the Dodgers and Padres.
Thanks to all seven central division teams getting eliminated in the wild card round, all four matchups in the next round are truly division series, with each NLDS and ALDS matching up teams from the same division.
The Dodgers (43-17) and Padres (37-23) had the two best records in the NL and the two best run differentials (LA +136, SD +84) in the majors. The Dodgers won six of 10 games against the Padres during the regular season, winning both series in San Diego and splitting four games at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles outscored San Diego 48-36 in the season series, with the Padres winning two of three one-run games.
The only question going into the NLCS is the health of the Padres pitching staff, which was without its top two starters — Mike Clevinger (elbow strain) and Dinelson Lamet (biceps discomfort) — in the opening round. In the three-game wild card series, starters Chris Paddack and Zach Davies combined for only 4⅓ innings in the first two games, followed by a bullpen game in Game 3.
San Diego used 24 appearances by relief pitchers totaling 22⅔ innings in the series. The three days off between now and the NLDS will give the Padres much-needed rest, but they will need more innings out of the starting pitchers to beat the Dodgers.
This NLDS, for the first time, will take place in an American League ballpark, with the Dodgers and Padres set for a best-of-5 series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The other NLDS, with the Braves playing the Marlins, is at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
The Dodgers flew to Texas earlier Friday.
Both NL division series will begin on Tuesday, with game times to be announced later. There are no days off during the division series, so if it goes the distance there will be five games played in five days.
