The Houston Astros pulled a surprise Thursday afternoon, announcing that veteran right-hander Zack Greinke is cleared to begin Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Oakland As.
Greinke, 36, was arranged to start Game 3 of the series on Wednesday, but was scratched less than 24 hours prior after experiencing arm pain. The six-time All-Star began Game 1 of Houstons wild-card series versus the Minnesota Twins, but only lasted 4 innings after issuing 3 strolls and two hits.

Houston turned to 2019 postseason hero Jose Urquidy to begin Game 3 in location of Greinke. He was not able to pitch the Astros into the ALCS after enabling 4 home runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Greinkes return suggests supervisor Dusty Baker wont need to dig much deeper into his reserves to find a 5th starter in the ALDS. Though if Greinke isnt 100 percent, it could be another taxing afternoon for Houstons bullpen.
An Astros win Thursday ends the series. An As win would force a decisive Game 5 and likely prompt Houston to reverse to Game 1 starter Lance McCullers Jr. If he does not pitch in relief of Greinke Thursday, Baker might also select to go with young Cristian Javier.
The Astros– baseballs designated bad guys since the World Series-winning 2017 clubs sign-stealing plan was revealed over the winter– are trying to protect their 4th straight ALCS look and take the baseball spotlight when again.
