Talking about smoke as a great thing feels a little gauche, but until recently, I really took pleasure in “smokey” as a fall flavor. If, like me, you are still a little skittish around flames, you can offer your mixed drink a good smoked character without any fire at all– you just need some smoked tea syrup.
The syrup is made with lapsang souchong–” smoked tea”– a black, Chinese tea typically smoke-dried over pinewood. The smoke really comes through and, when combined with lots of sugar, you get a fantastic, smoldering cocktail syrup.

Im not one to rail against pumpkin spice coffee beverages on Twitter (because I dont desire individuals to believe Im old), however a pumpkin cocktail is a little much for me. I can get into apple, and cinnamon isnt undesirable, but they all get leaned on a bit too heavily. However smoke? Thats a taste that merely hints at the season.

Fall is a strongly themed season. Sure, there are holidays that get an equal quantity of theming, but the autumnification of food and beverages lasts for months, and fall-themed flavors tend to be rather sweet.

You can add the syrup to a variety of cocktails, but I actually, really like it in an old made. You do not need a lot– just a teaspoon. It offers the drink simply the correct amount of charred sweetness, without diminishing whatever bourbon you happen to be enjoying. To make a smoked tea old fashioned, you will require:

1 1/5 ounces bourbon
1 teaspoon smoked tea syrup (dish here).
2 dashes Angostura bitters.

Combine all three ingredients in a low ball and stir. Add a big ice, stir a few more times, and garnish with a strip of lemon zest if you seem like it, making sure you reveal the oils from the passion before putting it in the glass.
