When the Ravens host the Cincinnati Bengals for an AFC North video game at noon CDT Sunday, Averett could see plenty of work once again.
Slot corner Tavon Youngs season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in the second video game of the season offered a higher requirement for Averett to be on the field. Martindale is free to capitalize on the flexibility offered by Humphrey and experienced defensive back Jimmy Smith if Averett can manage outside-corner duties.
” I believed that he played actually well,” Martindale said on Thursday. “I believed he had his finest practice of the year the other day, and Im really thrilled for him since weve all seen the growth.
… He gets better all the time. He has a really good man-cover ability set.
Averett had a career high of 5 tackles and registered his very first pass break up of 2020 versus Washington.
” I believe that Stevie Wonder can see that you have Marlon out there doing what he does and you have Marcus Peters doing what he does,” Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale stated. “You know who theyre going to pursue.”
” Yes, hes doing a genuine great task. And yet he can still be a lot better as he continues to tighten up his strategy and his eyes and a few of his footwork things, so Im really pleased with Anthony right now. Hes playing well.”
The Baltimore Ravens had 2 cornerbacks make first-team All-Pro acknowledgment in 2019– Marcus Peters and former Alabama standout Marlon Humphrey– so when their challengers have three pass receivers on the field, its clear which cornerback they choose to attack– the third one.
In Baltimores 31-17 success over the Washington Football Team last week, the third cornerback was Anthony Averett. The Alabama alumnus played 62 defensive snaps, the most in one game in his 3 NFL seasons.
The Bengals use 11 personnel– one running back, one tight end and 3 wide receivers– on 76 percent of their offensive snaps, second in the NFL to the Dallas Cowboys. Cincinnati uses two-time 1,000-yard receiver Tyler Boyd, seven-time Pro Bowler A.J. Green and 2020 second-round draft choice Tee Higgins most often when they deploy three wideouts at the same time as targets for quarterback Joey Burrow, the very first gamer picked in the 2020 NFL Draft.
