Report: Cowboys sign Garrett Gilbert off Browns practice squad – 247Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are set to sign quarterback Garrett Gilbert off the Cleveland Browns practice team, according to a report Monday night by NFL Network insider Tom Pelisserro. The reported move for the Cowboys follows starter Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending substance right ankle fracture during a late-third-quarter play in a 37-34 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.
The Cowboys bumped experienced Andy Dalton up one area to starter with third-string Ben DiNucci becoming a backup. Gilberts anticipated addition offers the Cowboys a newest addition to the depth chart.
Gilbert brings experience as a member of the Browns in 2019, logging five video games behind starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Browns signed veteran Case Keenum in the offseason, bumping Gilbert to the third-string function and on the practice squad for 2020.
As a professional, Gilbert restarted his profession when he starred for the Orlando Apollos in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football (AAF). Starting eight video games in the spring of 2019, Gilbert finished 157 of 259 passes (60.6 percent) for 2,152 yards and 13 goals to three interceptions.

The Rams selected Gilbert with the No. 214 general pick in the 6th round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He did not last long with his first string, ending up on the practice team after last lineup cuts and getting released Oct. 30, 2014.
Before the NFL, Gilbert divided time in college at Texas (2009-11) and SMU (2012-13). With the Mustangs in 23 video games (all starts), he completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 6,460 lawns and 36 goals to 22 interceptions.
Previously, in 32 games (14 starts) with the Longhorns, Gilbert was a 56.7-percent passer, throwing for 3,301 yards and 13 goals to 23 interceptions. A first-class hire from Austin (Texas) Lake Travis, he first signed his letter of intent with the Longhorns as the 247Sports Composites No. 13 total possibility, No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 3 player in the Lone Star State for the 2009 recruiting class.
