You Can Download Destiny 2: Beyond Light On PS4 Right Now, Ahead Of Launch – Forbes

Destiny 2’s upcoming update for Beyond Light is a wild one. It’s not just adding an expansion to the game, it’s removing five massive zones and changing a ton of stuff in the backend to get the overall size of the game way down ahead of next-gen launch.

If you read the TWAB carefully, you’ll know that on at least one platform, you can get a head start on downloading 60+ GBs of the game’s full reinstall that’s required for Beyond Light’s launch. You won’t have to wait until the night before and pray nothing goes wrong as you sleep.

On PS4 at least.

Late last night, Bungie allowed PS Plus users to start downloading the full update for the game two days ahead of launch. I checked this morning and yes, I am able to download the update, which for me, is clocking in at 59 GBs of downloading for an eventual final file size of 70 GB, well reduced from the over 100 GB it was before.

Bungie says that you’re only able to install this if you have auto-updates enabled, as they try to reduce server load by allowing PS Plus users to go early. I do have that, but I also was able to trigger this after startup by hovering over the game and doing “Check for Updates” which is how you usually manually download patches if auto-updates don’t start. So you can try that. If you do not have it at all, there is supposed another batch of access going out tonight at 11 PM ET.

I believe what is happening is that this is adding the new version of the game without fully removing the old version of the game, which is why the total space needed for installation is 170 GB on PS4. Like after this patch, you can still go to all the vaulted destinations, which are still in the game. But on Tuesday, those will be removed and that will no longer by the case. (Update: While you can download the patch now, it seems it will not install until tomorrow night at 11 PM ET)

So, what if you’re not PS4?

Xbox players can download the update Monday night after servers are taken offline around 10 PM ET. Though if you are getting a Series X and it’s not coming until the next day well…this is not going to be terribly helpful.

PC players will find the update just as a normally queued Steam update after the servers go down at 10 PM ET.

PS4 players are reminded not to delete the game, even if it is technically being downloaded and replaced, as this will screw this process up.

And I will remind everyone that we are still anticipating some sort of live event tomorrow night, possibly starting at 7 PM ET after players will be forced to download a small update, possibly as late as 10 PM ET when the servers go down. I don’t know if it lasts three hours or thirty seconds, but it’s in the Tower, so get ready to hang out there for a while.

I’m going to log in after this update to see if anything is different, but I don’t imagine it’s going to be and this is just pre-load for what’s to come. Download the update for yourself to get a head start, otherwise, you have to wait until tomorrow night for other platforms. Beyond Light launches officially at 12 PM ET on Tuesday, November 10.
