TALLAHASSEE — Florida State’s roster continues to undergo a major overhaul under Mike Norvell. The Seminoles removed two more players from the roster on Wednesday — QB James Blackman and WR Tamorrion Terry — bringing the Seminoles’ total to 16 players who’ve exited the program since Norvell took over in December.
Some, such as TE Tre’ McKitty and CB Kyle Meyers, were already looking to transfer elsewhere before Norvell really settled in. Others, like RB Khalan Laborn and CB A.J. Lytton, were removed from the roster. Blackman and Terry are among the examples of in-season attrition, but are not alone.
Norvell previously said he understood that roster movement can be expected with a coaching transition, but was asked about the sheer number of departures on Wednesday.
“A first-year coach at a program, I never think about attrition, from the first day I got here, these are all my guys, my players,” Norvell said on Wednesday. “I’m responsible for them, and it’s part of my job to help them grow and develop in every aspect. I don’t want to lose any player. There are guys we’ve had to go in different directions with, due to whatever circumstance or decisions that are made, but I can promise you that I want guys here who are 100 percent invested in growth and development.
“It’s going to be about that constant and consistent work that we have to put in in every aspect. I’m definitely excited about some of the steps that we’ve seen, especially some of the young players that have been forced into action here early. Their attitude and approach, it’s been pretty remarkable. But I never came in thinking ‘this is what it’s going to be’ of who’s going to be a part of it and who’s not. But we’re going to continue to hold people to the standard of what it takes to be successful.”
Most are looking for a fresh start elsewhere and it appears to be a mutual departure for both parties as Norvell seems open to the idea of totally revamping the roster. He brought in several transfers this year — RB Jashaun Corbin, TE Jordan Wilson, OL Devontay Love-Taylor, defensive DL Fabien Lovett, DE Deonte Williams and DE Jarrett Jackson, as well as CB Meiko Dotson and CB Jarrian Jones. Most of those additions have started or settled in among the two-deep.
We’ve seen 16 players exit the program, transfer or enter the transfer portal since December. Here’s a look at the attrition to date…
