Kevin Porter Jr. arrested early Sunday morning in Mahoning County, faces gun charge – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested early Sunday morning and faces charges of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, according to Mahoning County Sherriff records.

State Highway Patrol arrested Porter near Canfield, along I-76. An officer at the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office said Troopers booked Porter about 7:30 am and released him on $4,000 bond about three hours later.

According to the booking document, a loaded firearm was accessible to any operator or passenger without leaving the vehicle. Other details surrounding the arrest are not known at this time.

“We are aware of the situation involving Kevin Porter Jr. and are in the process of gathering information,” the Cavs said in a statement. “We have spoken with Kevin and will continue to address this privately with him as the related process evolves.”

Reached by cleveland.com Sunday afternoon, Porter’s attorney Alex Spiro provided this statement:

“Mr. Porter was issued a summons for a petty offense and released. We are gathering information and will have further comment at a later point.”

Porter, 20, had a promising rookie season and is considered one of the team’s building blocks. He averaged 10.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 50 games after being selected with the 30th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of USC.
