Black Friday
2020 gaming deals didn’t bring all of the usual doorbuster discounts on consoles you might expect, but there are a few reasons for that. The recent launches of the next-gen PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S consoles, alongside the ongoing pandemic and social distancing, have created intense demand for gaming products of all types. Many sought-after items, like the Nintendo Switch, sold out in the weeks leading up to Black Friday 2020 — as they have been since earlier this year.
But, there’s still a healthy selection of games and accessories available at their lowest prices of the year. That includes newly released PS5 and Xbox Series X games like “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla,” and “Watch Dogs Legion.”
The Switch has continued to sell out during Black Friday, but a $300 bundle with “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and three free months of Nintendo Switch Online have been popping up in limited quantities at different stores. First-party Nintendo games like “New Super Mario Wii U Deluxe” and “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” are $20 to $30 off at most retailers, and that includes digital copies from Nintendo’s eShop.
We’ve listed the best gaming deals we’ve found online so far. Be sure to check out all of our Black Friday deals coverage for more detailed information, like a breakdown of GameStop’s Black Friday sales, and where you can find the best Black Friday deals for the Nintendo Switch.
Ubisoft’s blockbuster action-adventure franchise is now on next-gen consoles, and you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S|X version of the game for free if you buy the PS4 or Xbox One version. Though the game is less than a month old, GameStop will offer 20% off during its Black Friday sale starting November 25.
“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2” gives the arcade-style skateboarding games a modern overhaul with redesigned graphics and new features. The games have also kept most of their incredibly influential soundtracks too, so nostalgic gamers have lots to look forward to. GameStop is offering $10 off the game during its Black Friday sale.
The Nintendo Switch has been the bestselling console in the US for 23 straight months, and with a $300 “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” bundle selling at multiple retailers for Black Friday, that streak is likely to continue despite the release of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
The “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” Switch bundle includes the game and a three-month membership to the Nintendo Switch Online service, but stock has been selling out fast. More may be made available for order during Black Friday weekend though, so be sure to keep checking at major video game retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop.
Several Nintendo Switch exclusives are $20 to $30 off at major retailers, matching the lowest price ever for games like “Super Mario Maker 2” and “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.” If you’re looking for digital copies to take on the go with your portable Switch, Best Buy, Amazon, and GameStop are offering the same games for $40. That’s just $10 more than the physical copy in most cases, and you’ll instantly receive a digital download code for the Nintendo eShop instead of waiting for shipping.
Now’s also a great time to consider expanding the Switch’s 32GB internal memory to store more games with a discounted MicroSD card. The Switch can support up to 2TB expansions, though the 512GB and 128GB options tend to be the most cost-effective.
The PlayStation 5 may be the most-coveted console of 2020, but don’t expect to see any deals on the newly released console or PS5 games during this year’s Black Friday sales. Instead, we’re seeing a selection of this year’s hit PlayStation 4-exclusive games — “The Last of Us 2,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” and “Final Fantasy VII Remake” — at their lowest prices since release.
Keep in mind that PS4 games will still work on PS5, and the next-gen system will automatically provide a significant boost in graphics quality and load times.
Sony is also hosting a huge online sale on digital PlayStation games in the PlayStation Network store, and you can get 25% off a one-year PlayStation Plus subscription, which is required to play online and provides free games each month.
“Final Fantasy VII” was one of the most influential games of its era, and this remake completely recreates the original game’s first chapter with new combat mechanics, state-of-the-art graphics, and an expanded story. GameStop is offering the game for $34.99, the lowest price we’ve seen since its release.
“Persona 5” is considered one of the greatest Japanese roleplaying games of all-time, alongside the likes of “Final Fantasy 7.” The “Royal” update adds new characters and an entirely new chapter to the game’s fully voiced story. This $35 off Black Friday discount is the lowest price since the game’s launch.
Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S earlier this month, but the new consoles aren’t on sale for Black Friday. The weekend’s best Xbox deal is on Microsoft’s Netflix-style gaming subscription, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which lets gamers play more than 100 titles on their Xbox, PC, or Android phone. We’ve called the $15-per-month subscription the best deal in gaming, and you can buy a three-month membership for $19.99 right now.
Official Xbox controllers are also $20 off right now at Best Buy, which includes the newly remodeled Xbox wireless controller for Series S and Series X.
Microsoft, like Nintendo and Sony, is also holding a massive online sale for digital Xbox games and PC games for Windows 10.
Resident Evil 3 introduces the iconic monster Nemesis as he chases heroine Jill Valentine through the zombie-infested streets of Racoon City. This is a remake of the PlayStation 1 classic with overhauled gameplay and gorgeous graphics. The game also includes a multiplayer mode called ‘Resident Evil: Resistance,’ offering extra replay value.
PC gamers usually need specific parts and peripherals to upgrade their gaming setup, and Black Friday often brings the price drops needed to make improvements. So far we’ve seen discounts on PC gaming products from well-known brands like Logitech and Razer, including all-time low prices on Logitech’s 502 wireless mouse, and Razer’s Kraken Ultimate headset. If you’re looking for an affordable laptop to start gaming on a PC, Dell has its G3 15 laptop for less than $600.
Few retail stores sell PC games in person, but you can find online sales on popular platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store, where thousands of digital games are up to 90% off.
