COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football gave its fans a much-needed dose of reassurance and relief Friday night.
The Buckeyes posted a photo of quarterback Justin Fields boarding the team plane bound for East Lansing, Michigan on their Twitter page Friday night. Fields is wearing a face mask and carrying food up the stairs onto the plane.
Ohio State is scheduled to kick off at noon Saturday, and had previously been cagey about which key players may or may not be available due to the team’s increased coronavirus cases last week.
Ohio State has not released exact numbers or identities of who tested positive, with the exception of coach Ryan Day. He remains in isolation and did not make the trip. Day is expected to return to in-person duties on Monday.
Ohio State is scheduled to released its status report about two hours prior to kickoff Saturday. It does not differentiate between illness, injury or disciplinary reasons for absences.
Ohio State will be without some players against the Spartans. Head team physician Dr. Jim Borchers said some players remain in isolation or quarantine in a news release on Friday. Day had previously said the Buckeyes will be “a little short-handed.”
That apparently will not include Fields, who will be looking to rebound from his worst start as a Buckeye in the 42-35 victory over Indiana two weeks ago. He ranks among the national leaders in passing efficiency (202.1, fourth), yards per game (302, 12th) and completion percentage (79.6, first).
