Report: Detroit Lions to waive speedy wide receiver Marvin Hall – MLive.com

ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions plan to waive wide receiver Marvin Hall, according to a report from Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network.

Hall, 27, has 17 catches for 290 yards and two touchdowns in five starts this year. He’s seen increased playing time due to injuries to Lions receivers Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola. Golladay has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Chicago. Amendola, 35, returned to practice this week and enters Week 13 without an injury designation. Marvin Jones has played a near every-down role most of the season, but he’s been quiet outside of a couple of outings.

Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus has seen at least two targets and 15 snaps in the previous four games, so an increased role could be on the way for the fifth-round rookie. In his report, Garafolo says Detroit is moving on from Hall to “give some of the younger guys a look.” It’s worth noting Cephus is the lone receiver locked up beyond this season in Detroit.

Jamal Agnew and Mohamed Sanu are other options on the roster. Agnew, the former All-Pro return specialist, made the switch to wide receiver in the most recent offseason. He’s continued to see sporadic looks out of the backfield and out wide without making much of an impact. Agnew, 25, is new to the position, and it’s possible the Lions want to kick the tires a little harder on this experiment. Sanu, 31, was signed from the practice squad last week and made a solid early impression. The veteran receiver caught all four targets for 32 yards and one touchdown last week, adding a successful two-point conversion catch to boot.

Another option to see some of Hall’s work is undrafted rookie tight end Hunter Bryant, who recently returned to practice. Bryant offers unique athleticism at the position and flashed some serious pass-catching ability in training camp. He’s been bothered by injuries since the get. Still, Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell said he liked what he saw out of Bryant in camp and wants to “get him an opportunity to get out on the field, see what he can do, see what we have.”

Victor Bolden and Tom Kennedy represent the team’s practice squad receivers. Both are more than familiar with the system and Bevell, spending most of the last two seasons in Allen Park.

It’s safe to assume Hall will attract suitors on the wire, for what it’s worth. He got it clicking with Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford last season, catching seven balls for a whopping 261 yards and one score in nine games. Hall showed signs of growth along the way, but is looking for a new team to finish the year.
