The Philadelphia Eagles are now smack-dab in the midst of a quarterback controversy, and with Jalen Hurts set to be the starter on Sunday against the Saints, it’s only natural to wonder how the team feels about the QB situation. Things seem a bit mixed on that front.
Fletcher Cox spoke to reporters on Wednesday afternoon and pretty emphatically supported Carson Wentz.
“Carson is my best friend on the team. I’ve his his back since day one. It sucks for a guy like Carson to be put in that position. It’s never one guy.”
Cox went on to say, however, that there would be no locker room divide over the decision, and that whoever was in at quarterback — even Nate Sudfeld the DT noted — the team would be supportive.
The defensive tackle was asked about “liking” a 94WIP tweet that asked followers to “retweet” in support Jalen Hurts and “like” to support Carson Wentz. A day after (not so) subtly showing his preference at QB on Twitter, Cox was adamant that he supports both but his tweet was not an accident.
“My tweet is my tweet and I stand with it.”
And, while Cox asserts that the QB decision won’t divide the locker room, when Rodney McLeod spoke with the media, his energy about the move was quite different. The safety spoke about how talented the rookie quarterback is, and how he’s excited to see what Hurts does with this opportunity. McLeod also pointed to Doug Pederson’s reasoning for the QB-switch as doing what he thought would give the team the best chance to win on Sunday.
Both players emphasized support for whichever quarterback is on the field, and at the end of the day, they’re all on the same team with one goal, to win. But, it already seems like there’s going to be at least some choosing sides.
Rookie receivers seem to be like “Alriiight, Hurts, our guy,” while it’s clear Kelce & Cox (and probably other vets) feel Wentz is being scapegoated. Of course, everyone says they’ll rally behind Hurts. But it isn’t like changing the air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror
