Organizers for Gen Con, the largest tabletop gaming convention in the U.S., plan to bring back the in-person event in 2021. On Tuesday, organizers announced dates for next year’s show: Aug. 5-8, 2021, at the Indianapolis Convention Center.
“Our goal for the new year is to hold Gen Con 2021 as planned, in person,” Gen Con organizers. “We’re working towards that objective with health and safety as our top priority. A variety of factors need to come together for a physical convention to be feasible, and we’re carefully monitoring local and national safety and travel guidelines, health data, resource availability, and the advice of our finest sages, scientists, and sorcerers.”
Gen Con was established in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Wargames convention by Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons. The event — which encompasses role-playing games, board games, collectible card games, and more — was eventually sold to former Wizards of the Coast CEO Peter Adkison in 1997. The convention has been held in Indiana since 2003. This year’s in-person event was canceled in May due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Gen Con’s announcement follows the rollout of a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus, which began being administered in the U.S. just this week. Another high-profile series of fan conventions, PAX, also recently announced dates for its 2021 slate of conventions.
