Though the Star Spirit known to Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom as “Geno” has only truly appeared in one game ever, he has somehow amassed quite the following. As such, many believe that Geno deserves a spot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s evergrowing roster. Of course, there are also plenty that don’t think this one-hit wonder should get a slot over other iconic video game characters that have yet to be featured.
Regardless, it seems that the debate about Geno’s chances have recently been put to rest for the time being. Now that the Geno Mii costume from Smash 4 has returned to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Geno is now seemingly disconfirmed. This was quite a disheartening blow to those that truly adored Geno’s character and wanted him in the game.
Masahiro Sakurai recently posted an image straight from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on his Twitter that is a clear homage to Super Mario RPG. In the shot, we can see Sephiroth performing his Final Smash against Bowser, Mario and a Mii Gunner dressed in the Geno Mii costume parts.
In Super Mario RPG, there is a secret boss fight that has the player going up against a foe known as “Culex.” Although Culex is an original character in Super Mario RPG, the battle is meant to simulate a boss fight in a typical Final Fantasy game. Even compared to the final boss, Culex is considered to be the most difficult battle in the game
The playable characters in Super Mario RPG are Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Peach. As such, Mario, Bowser and Geno can be a possible team that the player uses during the Culex fight (or any fight once Bowser is unlocked).
In Sakurai’s uploaded image, Sephiroth in his final boss form, Safer-Sephiroth, is seemingly taking up Culex’s role in the recreation of the iconic scene. Safer-Sephiroth and Culex do bear a lot of similarities to one another in terms of appearance.
Hilariously, this image kind of serves as a teasing reminder to fans that Geno has been disconfirmed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The closest we’ll ever get to playing Geno outside of Super Mario RPG at the moment is with this Mii costume — excluding a certain hack for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, of course.
