Bill Belichick heaps surprising praise on Adam Gase, Sam Darnold – New York Post

Jets fans may be counting the seconds until Adam Gase is no longer the head coach, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think there’s anyone better for the job in Florham Park.

Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Jets, the longtime Patriots coach fielded questions about the team he worked for just before coming to New England, as well as quarterback Sam Darnold. Belichick made it known how highly he thought of Darnold, who has seemingly regressed in his second and third NFL seasons, and that he doesn’t think the QB could be in better hands.

“I don’t think you could have anybody better coaching him than where he’s at,” he told reporters Wednesday.

Gase, who is 9-22 over two seasons with the Jets heading into Sunday’s game, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s struggles have been on him and the coaching staff. It’s widely believed that Sunday’s regular-season finale will be Gase’s final game with the Jets.

Through 11 games this season, Darnold has recorded just eight touchdown passes with nine interceptions. He missed four games this season due to a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.

“I don’t think there’s any shortage of talent there or playmaking ability,” Belichick said of Darnold. “… He’s an athletic guy that has great size, big arm, hard to tackle in the pocket, good prospect, and he’s being well coached.”
