It comes as no surprise, but the Jets will fire head coach Adam Gase after Sunday’s game against the Patriots according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Gase has a 9-22 record in his two years as Jets head coach. The team has been largely uncompetitive in his tenure, starting 1-7 in 2019 and 0-13 in 2020. Most notably, quarterback Sam Darnold has turned into a bust. Gase specifically was hired because he sold ownership on his ability to turn Darnold into a star.
The report lists many of the usual suspects as potential candidates for the opening.
Among the candidates who are slated to be considered are Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to college coaches such as Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh and Florida’s Dan Mullen to everyone in between.
Gase’s performance should be no small embarrassment for owner Christopher Johnson who staked his reputation on the hire and insisted Gase would eventually benefit the Jets. Now the Jets must turn the page and start to recover from this failed tenure.
