After the Texans suffered another last-second loss on Sunday, the team’s stars J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson walked off the NRG Stadium field together for the last time this season.
You could see Watson pat the defensive leader on the butt and the pair shake hands as Watt appeared to be doing most of the talking.
Thanks to NFL Films, now we know what was said during that slow walk.
“Good job, brother,” Watt told Watson. “I’m sorry. We wasted one of your years. I’m sorry. I mean, we should have 11 wins. I’m sorry.”
The 20-second clip was posted on Twitter to promote Showtime’s “Inside the NFL,” which airs at 8 p.m. Tuesdays.
Instead of 11 wins, the Texans finished a lowly 4-12, which included Sunday’s 41-38 loss to the Titans as well as an overtime defeat in Tennessee, a fumbled snap that cost the Texans a win against the Colts and several other losses where the defense couldn’t stop the opponent.
SOME RECORD: Jerry Jones brags about Cowboys’ attendance record in a pandemic
It’s hard to pin much of the ineptitude on Watson, who set a franchise record and led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards. He’s the first player since Jeff George in 1997 to lead the league in passing and play on a team with 12 or more losses. Watson also is the first player in NFL history to pass for at least 4,800 yards and rush for 400.
“He’s a great quarterback,” Watt told the media after Sunday’s game. “He’s going to continue to be a great quarterback and improve even more and be even better. I’m excited to watch his growth continue.”
Watson also reflected on that walk off the field when he talked with reporters Sunday.
“I just turned to some of the guys that were right beside me and just told them I love them and appreciate them for everything that they did this year,” Watson said. “I just went over and congratulated Tennessee and some of the players and told them good luck in the playoffs and just kind of walked off the field.
“I don’t know how I was really feeling. It’s weird. I’ve never missed a playoff as a full-time starter in my whole life. My rookie year, I got hurt. It’s a weird feeling to end the season right now.”
