ALLEN PARK — Dan Campbell is trying to bring Aaron Glenn with him from New Orleans as his defensive coordinator. Now we have the first name attached to the offensive coordinator position.
Ravens quarterbacks coach James Urban interviewed for offensive coordinator on Wednesday, according to NFL Network. Urban has no known ties to Campbell, instead coming up under the Andy Reid coaching tree. He spent the first seven years of his NFL career with Reid in Philadelphia, serving as an assistant to the head coach (2004-06), offensive assistant and quality control coach (2007-08) and quarterbacks coach (2009-10).
The quarterbacks he worked with: Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick.
Urban then spent the next seven years coaching the receivers in Cincinnati — two of whom were Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu — before taking the Ravens’ quarterbacks coaching job in 2018.
The quarterback he worked with there: Lamar Jackson, who became the youngest MVP in league history in 2019.
Urban is an interesting candidate because he has no known connections to Dan Campbell — oftentimes new head coaches like to surround themselves with people they know, like Matt Patricia did with Paul Pasqualoni and other staffers — and most of his recent experience has been working with dual-threat quarterbacks. Matthew Stafford, in case you hadn’t noticed, is not exactly a dual-threat.
If this hire happens, it’ll be interesting to see what exactly Campbell has in mind for his offense.
At any rate, the outside interview is a strong indication Darrell Bevell could be on his way out after serving two seasons as Detroit’s offensive coordinator. Cory Undlin is expected to be let go after serving one season as defensive coordinator, and Brayden Coombs didn’t even last his first season as special teams coordinator. He was fired for calling his own fake punt in the fourth quarter of a game in Tennessee.
