The Red Sox have long said they’ve been actively working to add depth and versatility to their squad, even if no deals were coming to fruition. Then in the span of 24 hours this weekend, they agreed to deals with two key pieces that should help complete their puzzle this season.
On Friday night, the Red Sox agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with super utilityman Enrique Hernandez, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. On Saturday, they agreed to a one-year deal worth $10 million with veteran starter Garrett Richards, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal reportedly has an option for a second year.
The 32-year-old right-hander is coming off a promising season with the San Diego Padres where he posted a 4.03 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 8.1 K/9 over 14 games and 10 starts.
