Nick Sirianni’s first coaching staff in Philadelphia continues to come together.
The Eagles on Monday morning reached a deal to make former Chargers offensive coordinator Shane Steichen their new OC, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Steichen, 35, was one of just two known candidates for the job, along with Denver RBs coach Curtis Modkins.
Just like defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Steichen has close ties to Sirianni. The two worked together with the Chargers from 2014-17.
If there were any questions about the Eagles’ letting Sirianni put together his own coaching staff, those have been answered in the last few days. Every coach we’ve heard that’s being added to this staff has worked with Sirianni before. This is significant because the Eagles really helped Doug Pederson put together his first staff five years ago. Pederson had worked in two places but under the same head coach, so he didn’t have the resources to put together a top staff like Sirianni does now.
Sirianni and Steichen were both position coaches with the Chargers when Sirianni left to be Frank Reich’s OC in Indianapolis in 2018. After that, Steichen stayed on with the Chargers and eventually rose to the level of full-time offensive coordinator in 2020.
But Anthony Lynn got fired and Brandon Staley got the job in LA, so Steichen was available.
While Steichen became the interim OC in 2019, he was given that title full-time in 2020. Under Lynn, Steichen and QBs coach Pep Hamilton, first-round pick Justin Herbert had a breakout rookie season. The Chargers were the No. 9 offense in the NFL, averaging 382.1 yards per game, and the No. 6 passing offense.
Back in 2016, Steichen actually replaced Sirianni as the Chargers’ quarterbacks coach when Mike McCoy’s staff was reshuffled. Sirianni coached receivers his last two years with the Chargers.
Earlier in the offseason, Steichen garnered interest from the Seahawks about their offensive coordinator job and was even reportedly a candidate to remain in LA. But now he’s coming to Philly to form an offensive coaching staff with Sirianni and new pass game coordinator Kevin Patullo, who comes over from Indianapolis.
Here’s a history of Steichen’s coaching career:
2010: Louisville, Offensive assistant
2011-12: Chargers, Defensive assistant
2013: Browns, Offensive quality control
2014-15: Chargers, Offensive quality control
2016-19: Chargers, Quarterbacks
2019: Chargers, Interim offensive coordinator
2020: Chargers, Offensive coordinator
2021: Eagles, Offensive coordinator
