After two disappointing years with the Mets, Jed Lowrie is returning to Oakland on a minor league deal, the Athletics announced Wednesday.
Lowrie missed all of last season and had just eight plate appearances in 2019 during his brief, injury riddled stint in Queens, which cost the Mets $20 million.
“Oakland feels like home,” Lowrie said. “I’m excited to rejoin this group and do what I can to help us win.”
The infielder, now 36, was coming off an All-Star 2018 season with the A’s in which he hit 23 home runs, 99 RBIs and 37 doubles when Brodie Van Wagenen, then the Mets’ general manager and previously Lowrie’s agent, signed him in January 2019.
Lowrie began experiencing left knee pain the following month, and never fully recovered.
Van Wagenen, who had a habit of bringing in former clients, was fired this offseason after the Mets were bought by Steve Cohen. The signing of Lowrie is considered to be one of the worst moves of his two-year tenure.
